An Interview With Parts Industry Insiders, Matt Gold and Kyle West
In our third post for Spork Marketing’s interview series, we talk with Matt Gold, President & Data Czar and Kyle West, Founder & Chief Geek, from RPMWare. As enthusiasts, both Kyle and Matt understand aftermarket auto shops and manufacturers don’t want to spend time maintaining part prices. They want to update cars. RPMWare provides e-commerce services and solutions that help their customers spend more time doing what they want to do.
Can you describe your product/service as if I knew nothing about it or the market?
RPMWare helps automotive shops and manufacturers get online and sell parts.
What’s your standard ‘elevator pitch’ for your company?
Matt: RPMWare provides a “turn-key” e-commerce solution to the automotive aftermarket. What makes us special is that we’re built from the ground up, specifically for the automotive industry. Since we work directly with manufacturers, we provide product data that is up-to-date and accurate.
Kyle: RPMWare is perfect for the auto shop owner that can install a set of brakes and knows the parts that go on a car – but doesn’t have the ability to manage a website nor wants to deal with spreadsheets. We also provide a host of services to manufacturers, from data standardization to full on web site development.
Can you tell us briefly about your parts industry experience?
Matt: I started a company in college called Motovicity and spent about five years building that and learning about the industry from the WD side of things. During that time, I met Kyle who was operating a very cool and successful e-commerce business. From there, I left Motovicity to work for EXEDY USA, where I learned the industry from the manufacturer’s perspective and, most importantly, what part data standardization (ACES/PIES) was.
After that, I was presented with an opportunity to take over a e-commerce business and knew the right guy for the job: Kyle. Kyle conceived and developed RPMWare from the ground up and used our newly acquired e-commerce business as a test bed of sorts to get it off the ground. From there, as they say, the rest is history.
What is your favorite part about your job?
Kyle: Being able to stay connected with all the innovations in the automotive aftermarket is a huge plus.
Are there any common misconceptions that people have about the products or services you offer?
Matt: We’re not an ATM machine. We provide a service that frees up your time to do everything else you need to accomplish in a day. That includes marketing, customer service, working deals, SEO, exploring new markets, etc. Just because you use RPMWare doesn’t mean there aren’t other things that you need to do to be successful.
When you’re talking to potential customers, what are the 3 most important things you want them to know?
1) We’re here. Everyday, we’re working to make RPMWare better for you.
2) We truly value your input. Every decision we make in regards to product development or new brands starts from our clients requests.
3) We’re car guys first. If you’d rather just talk about cars, that works for us.
What do you attribute to your company’s success?
Hard work and dedication.
How long has your company been in business?
We just celebrated our 10 year anniversary.
How did you choose your current business location?
RPMWare is gearing up to move into our new offices at M1 Concourse in Pontiac MI. This location is perfect for any automotive enthusiast, and Metro Detroit is an ideal location for any automotive-based business.
Where do you see the market for your product/service moving over the next 5 years?
Matt: I think the types, amount and quality of data will have to continue to improve. Full 360 views of products. Installation videos. Who knows? Maybe even “3D print at home” things for small brackets and clips will be options.
