This helped me save time enduring a sales presentation, which was my suspiction..

I do agree 100% with the above mention article. I was trying to promote my TAXI service in Dallas- Fort Worth area but fail to do so due to “nofollow” issue. I can not find my company’s name. But unfortunately, I have paid for four month and a one time fee. All of them are NON REFUNDABLE. Please be careful. Thanks!

Karen – I don’t know the exact source of data, but usually these companies buy a bulk feed from InfoUSA or Acxiom.

I’ve also seen people that scrape data from other directories and then re-sell it.

Does anyone know where they get the information to feed their free listings? I have a client complaining because many of their their free listing are incorrect. This is a nationwide client, so I can’t go in and try to correct one by one. I sent them an e-mail 3 days ago and I have not received a response. I’m going to call them next, but I am sure they will try to sell me instead of just allowing us to send the a file of the listings or tell me where they pull the information from. If anyone knows, please let me know. I would rather not have to even call them if I can avoid it.

Mr Smith – You and I are on the same page…I have seen too many complaints about this company to believe that David Greene was the only person at MagicYellow engaging in this sort of thing.

As a former employee with Magic Yellow in Agoura Hills, CA, I agree with you, they have very deceptive practices and all employees read a manipulative 8 page script which was formulated by the self centered sales manager who’s prior sales experience was the receptionist at a 24 hour fitness club. The company is very small, they have 3 sales people total for there supposed nationwide company, 2 web designers and a bunch of looser owners who work out of a run down, 1,200 SF unprofessional office. They have half page re-buttal scripts in case the customer is going south and in most cases the customers listing does not appear in the first page of the google, bing and MSN search. So the agent, before calling you, types in many key words so that magic yellow some how appears on page one, then if they are 10 rows down, they tell the customer that there aren’t any services like yours being offered in your community so you will be number 1, which is a lie. I can’t believe that I stayed their for 9 month’s but after seeing how many people they were ripping off, morally I had to quit!!!

As I have not the slightest doubt … that everything he did, was/is pretty much routine, when their sales staff is contacting people to solicit paid listings for magicyellow.

It’s not like the guy was some rogue salesman for them. I appreciate the warning from the site admin here.

Deceptive sales practices are pretty much the norm across so many industries you cant possibly list them all. Kind of sad, but buyer beware, always has to be the rule of thumb for anyone being approached for any product or service.

Just common sense to be skeptical and do your homework. My counter offer would be a free trial period, with no obligation or commitment to buy, to see the wonderous benefits the salesman was citing.

Regardless in terms of free business listings, magicyellow is a baby … with a fraction of the traffic many others have. If I were going to upgrade to a paid listing … they wouldnt even be on the list of sites being considered.

As again, basic common sense tells us … a site with 10 times the traffic and probably comparable pricing, would be a much better choice. … jmo.

I have heard that David Greene no longer works at MagicYellow. Please do not judge a company based on one employee.
