I used to work for Magic Yellow and I have to say not all of their work is bullshit. Some of the stuff did actually work. Everyone who worked there the time I did truly believed in it so we didn’t “sell” advertisements thinking it wouldn’t help. I left because I realized I wasn’t making enough for what I was doing. I truly feel that the owners are selfish and greedy, and they made it kind of fun to work there so they can hide the fact that they’re totally taking advantage of you. It’s true, we used scripts almost the whole time, and there were certain analogies we had to remember whenever the potential customer had a doubt. We were driven to succeed and make as many sales as possible, making almost nothing in return. Everyone over there is full of bs, and nothing is fair.

I look back and wish I hadn’t wasted my time working for those people.

I think Magic Yellow’s service COULD help some businesses but I think it’s such a tiny percentage that it’s not even worth it. And even if it WAS more effective, I wouldn’t give those owners a penny. That’s how bad it was.

WOW – That’s less than two tenths of a penny per word…2 cents per word is low, with 3-10 cents per word being pretty normal.

I can’t say that this is indicative of a bad business, but I will agree that it’s hard to imagine getting a very good business description for the grand sum of $0.30. How can anyone write a careful, thoughtful 200 word description for less than dollar?

These people are outrageous!

They just put up an ad on the NYC Craig’s List Wed April, 4th.

“If you are accepted as a writer, you will be assigned to write short business descriptions of 175-225 words. You will be paid $15 for every batch of 50 short descriptions that is reviewed by our staff and approved to be published on the site.

We ask that you be available to write a minimum of 300 short descriptions per week, however more are available if you have the capacity.”

Then they list a whole list of scholarly requirements as if you’re writing for The Atlantic Monthly.

This BS has to stop! I urge you to tell business not to support this company. I’ve had enough!

Thank you for sharing this extremely helpful information. I wanted to a “free” listing but received a message that I could not have my free listing without having to call. It made me a bit suspicious as none of the other directories required that I call…

This helped me save time enduring a sales presentation, which was my suspiction..

I do agree 100% with the above mention article. I was trying to promote my TAXI service in Dallas- Fort Worth area but fail to do so due to “nofollow” issue. I can not find my company’s name. But unfortunately, I have paid for four month and a one time fee. All of them are NON REFUNDABLE. Please be careful. Thanks!

Karen – I don’t know the exact source of data, but usually these companies buy a bulk feed from InfoUSA or Acxiom.

I’ve also seen people that scrape data from other directories and then re-sell it.
